The Marszewski brothers took over the tavern their mother, Maria, had run since 1986 and built it into something that functions simultaneously as a 500-to-700-bottle bottle shop, a neighborhood bar with beer-bottle chandeliers and a rotating tap list, and a community anchor for one of the city’s most underreported South Side neighborhoods. The adjacent Kimski — Polish-Korean fusion — means you can move freely between two bars and a full kitchen without leaving the building.
Maria’s stocks its own Marz Community Brewing label alongside a beer selection that rewards serious exploration. The crowd skews local without being territorial, the bartenders are knowledgeable without performing it, and the whole operation feels like what every neighborhood bar aspires to be before the concept gets smoothed out. Nothing here is for show.
